Week 9: Space + Art

This week’s topic is about space and art. According to Professor Vesna, nanotechnology, art, biotechnology, robots, and mathematics are related to space, which means almost all the topics that we learned from this DESMA9 class are all related to the space and space is a really nice topic to end the course.

There are several parts of the lesson which I enjoyed a lot. The idea of the space elevator introduced by Arthur C Clarke in 1976 in the novel was introduced to us. This idea is to construct the giant structure that is rising from the ground to satellite so that it can be used instead of rockets. This idea of space elevator turns out that it has possibility of actually being constructed and now scientists and NASA are working on this project. This idea was really interesting to me. I always wonder if there is another way of visiting space other than using rockets, so that more people can experience the beauty of the space. The idea of space elevator is somewhat simple, but I could never come up with that idea by myself. The other part that was interesting to me was when professor discussed about animals. I did not know animals play huge role in human’s space projects. Dogs were the first ones to be sent to space. Russians were the first to send dogs to space to see what it is like to send living being to space. I am really thankful to animals that with their sacrifice, we were able to discover what it is like in space. However, I feel really bad that they have to be sacrificed just for human.
Among many different topics that we discussed in this class, the influence of space on art is most apparent to me. There are numerous art works that was inspired by space, but to me. For example, a recent movie, “Interstellar”, is about a team explorers traveling through space in order to ensure humanity’s survival and this movie was loved by the public. There are many other space movies, such as “Star Wars”, “The Martian, and “Gravity” all succeeded commercially. Space is not a place where people can easily visit or experience, so it remains very special, new and curious to many people and I believe that is space movies are succeeding.
Personally, I always thought space itself is a piece of art. Whenever I see the photo of space with all its major planets and stars in it, it looks so harmonious together that I really liked watching the photo of space. Also, even the photo without the planets, the color of space itself is so mysterious and beautiful at the same time.
